Whitewater softball is region runner-up

By Michael Boylan - Posted on 11 October 2011

How close was the Whitewater softball team to a region title? Two runs. The Lady Wildcats lost to eventual region champions Union Grove 1-0 in the first game of the region 3-AAAA final four, in international tiebreaker, and then lost to them again 1-0 in the region championship. Between the one run losses, Whitewater beat Northgate 10-7 and beat Ola 8-0.

Whitewater will open the state playoffs at home this week against Jonesboro with games starting tomorrow.

Jonesboro (11-9) had two region losses during the regular season, one to Creekside (23-21) and one to Lovejoy (14-8). The Lady Cardinals look like they have some bats. They scored in double digits in all 11 of their wins and in two of their losses. They will need those bats because Whitewater’s pitching and defense is great. The Lady Wildcats (29-8) have given up three runs or less 28 times and have scored in double digits nine times, many times against some high caliber opponents.

The winner of Whitewater and Jonesboro will take on the winner of Houston County and Wayne County next Wednesday.
