Teams pick up wins, Chiefs reach 4-1
It was a good night for Whitewater, Sandy Creek, Landmark Christian and Our Lady of Mercy and a very good night for McIntosh.
The McIntosh Chiefs hosted Mundy's Mill for homecoming and won 23-18. The win put the Chiefs' record at 4-1 for the first time since 1995. McIntosh jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of two quarterback keeper touchdown runs from Andrew Johnson (12 yards and 45 yards). Mundy's Mill scored with 31 seconds left in the first half but Jake Carney blocked the extra point to keep the game at an eight point margin.
The Tigers scored again two minutes in to the second half but their two point conversion was thwarted. Johnson threw a 62 yard touchdown pass to Trey Walters to out the Chiefs ahead 20-12. Mike Licitra's 31 yard field goal in the fourth quarter made it 23-12 but Mundy's Mill didn't give up. They scored late in the quarter but were thwarted on another two point conversion. The Tigers had the ball with a minute and a half to go but McIntosh's Jabari Ajao intercepted a pass and preserved the win for McIntosh.
"You can't just credit one player tonight, especially on defense," said McIntosh head coach Lee Belknap. "You just have to say the guy in the green helmet got it done."
McIntosh will be off next week and will return to kick off their sub-region schedule against Whitewater the week after.
Whitewater took on Forest Park, led 35-0 at the half and won 48-7. Kendall Conley had two first half touchdowns, Josh Alexander added another and Christian Wafford had one more. The second half was much slower but the Wildcats held on to the win and improved to 4-1. They will host Northgate next week.
Sandy Creek started their region schedule and took on Fayette County. The Patriots (4-0) won 55-14. Eric Swinney had three first half touchdowns, while Mitch McMillin had two field goals in the win. Trey Walker threw a touchdown pass to Justin Sumpter, Cole Garvin threw a touchdown pass to Demarre Kitt, Delvin Weems ran for a touchdown and Khiry Lain recovered a fumble for another touchdown. Sandy Creek plays at Troup next Friday, while Fayette (0-4) hosts Carrollton.
Landmark Christian faced Mt. Vernon Presbyterian and won 62-0. The War Eagles (3-2) will play at Our Lady of Mercy (4-1), which beat Pace Academy 33-21.
Starr's Mill (2-3) took on Drew and lost 14-6. The Panthers will play at Creekside next Friday.
