Whitewater takes third at Southside Brawl
Over 20 schools from Georgia joined the Wildcats at the Southside Brawl this weekend at Whitewater High School. Whitewater took third at the event. Five Wildcats made it to the championship round with eight medaling in the tournament.
Austin Penland went 3-0 on Friday with two pins and a tech fall. Saturday was more of the same. Austin had a bye in the first round, then pinned Holloman of Alexander and beat Yelverton of Lee County 6-2. His championship match against Edwards of Creekview was a nail biter. After a scoreless first, Penland escaped Edwards for the first point of the match. Austin’s consistent attack brought him another point as Edwards was called for stalling and Penland held on for 2-1 win for the championship.
The 220 lb. weight class championship went to Dylan Davis. On Friday, Dylan won his first match by pin and after a bye was pinned in the last period in his last match. This moved him to a 7th seed for Saturday. He first beat Sage of McIntosh by a pin. He then beat the #1 seed Cobb of South Paulding and McKinney of Alexander by pin. Davis’s final match was against Grove of Lee County. No points were scored in the first period, but in the second Dylan scored two points on a reversal. In the third period, Davis was taken down, but escaped for the 3-2 lead and the eventual championship.
Other Wildcats that placed in the tournament include Logan Wesolowski (113), Francisco Obregon (160) and George Harris (285) taking second place. Third place went to Max Sultan (132). Reid Loveless (106) and Zach Thorne (126) finished in fifth place.
