Wildcats win region title
2012-2013 Region 4-AAAAA boys basketball tournament was named after assistant head Noah Chalkley, who tragically died of a sudden heart attack in January, so it seems only fitting that the Wildcats would win it all after a 50-32 victory over Starr’s Mill in the region championship.
It’s Whitewater’s first ever basketball region championship and it was a special moment for head coach Jason Barnes.
“The tournament is named after coach chalk so we might as well win it,” said Barnes. “I know coach [chalk] is proud of these guys, you’ve seen the movie angels in the outfield and now there’s Chalkley on the basketball court.”
Whitewater’s Darius Sharpe led the way in scoring with a game high 20 points, while Panther’s Jeremiah Vrundy had 12.
Starr’s Mill led for a majority of the second half going on a 6-0 run late in the quarter but Whitewater’s Kyle Dugger hit a big jumper as time ran out to cut the led 24-22 at halftime.
“Dugger had a huge shot and I think that gave us a lot of momentum, I challenged our team to lock down defensively and they did,” said Barnes
After the half, Whitewater pressured the ball creating a lot of turnovers leading to fast break opportunities on the other end. Starr’s Mill only scored eight points in the second half and two points in the fourth quarter alone.
The Wildcats led by as many as 20 points late in the fourth quarter giving them a historic victory on an emotional night.
