Brandon Putnam, a Sandy Creek graduate and a freshman football player at Duke University, was arrested Sunday with two other Duke players after police said someone was firing a gun into the air.

From here on out, the games have lots of importance in region standings and the Fayette County basketball teams are in a very heated race.

Four of the five girls basketball teams from Fayette County schools will participate in the second annual Girls Night Out at Starr’s Mill this Saturday.

Pandemonium is defined as a very noisy place or a very wild uproar or noise, but on Saturday night Whitewater vs. Sandy Creek was the definition of pandemonium. What many people on both sides thought would be a complete Sandy Creek blowout were pleasantly surprised to see a high scoring shootout filled with many big plays. Throughout the game both the Wildcats and Patriots showed the crowd how a high school basketball game is supposed to be played, with high energy, a lot of heart and emotion, and where certain players step up and lead their teams.

Whitewater hosted Sandy Creek on Saturday and the two varsity girls teams were about as similar as the moon and the sun because of Sandy Creek’s inside game and up in your face defense versus the fast break offense and zone defense of Whitewater. As the game unfolded, the Lady Cats proved to be no match for the Lady Patriots.

Sandy Creek’s boys took on Northgate on Tuesday and won 67-27. The Patriots were led by Emerson Williams’ 14 points and six rebounds, while Brandon Hopkins led Northgate with 12.

Inclement weather and school closings moved the 5-AAAA duals to Saturday at Alexander High School.

Sandy Creek’s boys defeated Fayette County on the hardwood Tuesday night, 70-63.

The ball drops on New Year’s Eve and when it bounces into the new year, the local high school basketball teams bound back into their region schedules and push towards the postseason.

The Class AAAA All State football team was announced last Friday and Sandy Creek, the Class AAAA state champions, was obviously well represented.
